Summer Lulls, and the Nook

Currently Listening to: 'Your Love is My Drug' - Ke$ha (Yes, I am THAT kind of dork)

It's raining at my house, and my grandparents are watching the news. *le sigh*

You know, the thing I really hate about summer vacation is the lull in time. I used to sleep all day, then stay up half the night unable to sleep. That is probably worse than the heat, and the fact that I don't have school to distract me from home.

It's like "Yeah! School's over, freedom is mine!"

Then the very next day, "Eh, freedom can wait till tomorrow."

My problem is that I always plan to do so many things with my sudden surplus of free time, but I never get started in favor of something else.

Like this for example. I wanted to make a blog for book reviews, because I read all the time and I figured it would be fun. It's June, and I've only posted two book reviews. Tis' a failure, I am!

Oh well, I'll be busting my ass for school in another month, so I don't see the point of cracking down over the summer. It's a vacation, right?

Anyway, on a good note, my art skills have improved somewhat. The other night I drew up the plans for a Tin Woman costume. I was thinking about something a friend of mine had mentioned in eighth grade. He painted a picture of our friends as the characters for The Wizard of OZ. He said that I would be the Tin Woman, and wear nothing but silver body paint. The costume includes most of the body to be covered in silver paint, but clothes are required.

The costume lead to short story forming in my mind, and since I thought of it at 11:49 at night, of course I was able to type it out. I might post it at a later date.

Like most avid readers, I have this list of books that I've read that I wish to acquire for my reading shelf. (Or in my case, a stack of milk crates) My list includes books that I have read, and books that I wish to read. Now, recently, I've been pondering book stores, and how expensive books are now days.

Currently Listening edit: 'Mixdown' - Holiday Parade

Now, I stumbled upon the Kindle, and the Nook, the electrical book that allows you to keep all of your favorite books on hand at all times. It's light, it's portable, and you can buy extra memory for it if you're like me and have many favorite books.

Now aside from the fact that I spent probably three hours a day on the computer, and the rest of my time reading, and with an electronic book storage device, that would be 24 hours with my eyes glued to a computer screen, I thought the Nook would be an awesome toy. That is, until I got to thinking about it.

You have to pay a fee every month to keep the service with the Kindle and the Nook, when it would be cheaper to just go ahead and buy the paperback books to begin with. Sure the Nook would be lighter than carrying five books with you all the time, but the Nook is a computer, and where a normal book can take wear and tear and still function properly, the Nook could short circuit, or otherwise malfunction, and you would loose all of your books. The same goes for the Kindle.

I know that there are cases that you can buy to protect them, but the cases can't save the device from everything, and I know this from experience. So while I'm supportive of most advances in technology, this is one that I find rather silly, and besides, I still love that 'New Book' smell.

  1. Haha, yeah; I always had a problem with the whole 'e-book' thing. It's cool, but I like real books better. :P
